Today we tell you everything you need to know about chickens, biological eggs and Bioveg!
Have you ever wondered how our organic free-range eggs are produced? 🐓
I love eggs, you love eggs, we love eggs, okay you get, eggs are A-MA-ZING not only because they taste good but also because they’re a very versatile ingredient. We can use eggs to make delicious recipes such as tortillas, cakes, pancakes, empanadas, and so, so much more.
How it started
It all started in 2018 when Federico and Hugo recovered their family farm: Quinta da Santa Maria, in Escoural
What started as a family experience has become what we now know as Bioveg. The torrid plains of the Alentejo give home to this innovative agricultural project, where human intervention is avoided as much as possible. In 3 hectares of land we find: orchards, greenhouses and many (200 at the time this article is being written) happy singing chickens 🤩
Bioveg raises chickens in organic production mode to produce free-range, organic eggs!
Organic production of chickens meets several criteria regarding animal well-being, which is why at Bioveg chickens are raised in the open air, running free in designated pasture areas, that can be fruit or olive groves, depending on the time of the year 🍃
To ensure the minimum human intervention Bioveg was the first Portuguese farm to adopt a technology, imported from the United Kingdom: the Chicken Caravan.
The Chicken Caravan
“What now?! “, you ask… By now you might be thinking this is a place where chickens go on vacations (don’t be fooled by the name). The chicken caravan is a moving trailer where chickens can not only spend the night but also lay their eggs, in a safe and quiet environment, away from human intervention. The eggs are laid in a treadmill which moves only when the eggs are being collected, which usually happens one to two times a day.
All about eggs
“So, what is Biovegs secret to having such good eggs all year long?“, we wonder…
Chicken eggs vary a lot in size, color and flavor. First, and most importantly, the taste. What makes Bioveg eggs so tasty is the food chickens are feed with: cereal grains and soybeans from organic farming. Secondly, and also important, the size. The size of an egg depends on what the chicken did that day: the more they rest, the bigger the eggs will be. Finally, the color, which many believe to be the most important factor but is in fact just a matter of corn, the more corn chickens eat, the yellower their eggs will be, but yellow doesn’t mean flavor! What really matters is the nutrients and good foods chickens eat every day. After being collected at the chicken caravan, the eggs are cleaned, weighted and packed.
